Championing both flavour and sustainability, this neighbourhood café and bar in the heart of Chiswick is redefining the Great British brunch. Abigail Spooner visits to try out the eco-conscious menu.

Where is it?

Tucked behind the bustling Chiswick High Road in West London, a few strides down the quaintly named Windmill Road. Winnie’s is situated within room2, the UK’s first net-zero hometel (a space between a home and a hotel, to you and me).

What’s all the fuss about?

As part of the hometel’s ethos, 100% of the carbon emissions have been reduced and rebalanced to zero, and sustainability is a key focus for the café too. Local, seasonal and organic ingredients are dotted across the menu to limit the carbon footprint of each dish.

What’s the place like?

Marble-topped tables, brightly coloured velvet furnishings and an abundance of plants create a calming oasis away from the high street crowds. Enjoy the natural light pouring in through the large window and watch passers-by, or pitch up in a cosy corner for a work-from-home(tel) set-up, fairtrade coffee in hand.

What did we eat and drink?

The diverse menu covers the usual breakfast suspects, with a few unexpected twists… eggs benedict is accompanied by smoked pickles, while the overnight oats are equally intriguing, topped with peanut butter meringue. I opt for the huevos rancheros which arrives artfully presented and packs a riot of flavours and textures. Perfectly poached eggs ooze over toasted cornbread and contrast tangy pickled onions, creamy smashed avocado and a chilli-laden salsa macha (a spicy Mexican condiment). Freshly squeezed orange juice ticks the thirst-quenching box, while my boyfriend enjoys a coffee frappe with oat mylk from a family-owned farm in Hambledon. On the food front, he can’t resist the Full Winnie’s: a plateful showcasing those all-important local, organic ingredients, including sausages, ultra-crisp bacon, roasted mushrooms and baked beans (come armed with an appetite).

Your verdict?

A refreshingly unique menu, a calming ambience and a thumbs up for the planet make this café a worthy brunch spot destination. Or why not while away an evening at the bar, sampling a zero-waste cocktail or two?

Lasting memory?
