6 unusual pizza toppings to try

For a food that’s so simple and globally adored, pizza sure can cause controversy. The heated – and oftentimes ugly – debate on whether pineapple belongs on a slice has rumbled on since the internet began, while purists were further outraged recently when Australian pizza chain Bubba Pizza started selling its orange pizza, topped with mozzarella, smoked ham and, well, orange. While we’ve never tried taking an easy peeler to a margherita, we’re all about trying new things, and our recipe writers have certainly dreamed up some adventurous pizza toppings in our time. Here are six of our favourites to try…

Nordic-style pizza
With smoked trout, caviar, pickled veg and herbs, this ‘pizza’ takes inspiration from Nordic tastes. Traditional Icelandic strained yogurt skyr is used both to make the base and as part of the topping.

Dolcelatte, prosciutto and pickled peach pizza with hot honey
Nothing says summer like juicy peaches. Here, the stone fruit is pickled and matched up with salty dolcelatte cheese, mozzarella, slices of prosciutto and spicy hot honey.

Spring veg spelt pizza
Here’s one for the veg fans. A homemade beetroot chutney is dolloped across a ricotta-and-parmesan covered spelt base, along with Tenderstem broccoli, fresh peas and rocket.

Taco pizza flatbreads
Using Greek-style flatbread as a base, these ‘pizzas’ fuse Tex-Mex and Mediterranean flavours together, with red onions, kidney beans and salsa. All those plant ingredients mean it’s also a great high-fibre option.

Courgette brunch pizza
Taking cues from your favourite brunch menu, this pizza has a base made with grated courgette and is then adorned with chestnut mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and roasted red peppers. All finished with a cooked egg in the middle.

Ploughman’s flatbread pizza
Sandwich turns main meal for this speedy number. Wafer-thin ham, silverskin onions, watercress and ploughman’s chutney are all in the mix for this salute to the classic British pub lunch.
